Grimoire Valentine

A researcher for Shin-Ra Manufacturing, Dr. Grimoire Valentine is Vincent's father. In a nutshell, Grimoire is an easy going, well-mannered, and good-natured person with a penchant for discovery.

Aside from taste in clothing, Vincent shares many physical traits and characteristics with his father. According to Lucrecia, Vincent had Grimoire's eyes. It's this specific feature that haunts her throughout the game. Grimoire and Vincent never shared a scene together, but it's implied in their words and actions that they had a strong relationship.

Lucrecia: Is this the place you spoke of?
Grimoire: Yes. Deep within this grotto is where Chaos is destined to awake.
Lucrecia runs ahead in excitement.
Grimoire: (Laughing) Wait!
Lucrecia: Come on, Doctor Valentine!
Grimoire: Heh. The fountain isn't going anywhere!

While other employees of Shin-Ra laughed at Lucrecia's Chaos thesis, Grimoire kindly helped his assistant in her research. He eventually discovered the crystal grotto where Chaos was destined to awake and brought her there. Lucrecia, excited that she finally had the evidence needed to support her thesis, rushed a sample of Chaos back to the lab. In her haste, she worked on the dark matter without taking the time to understand the power it possessed. Grimoire stood by her side as he watched her quickly type away on the computer and warned her that she shouldn't rush into things.

Grimoire: Don't you think you are taking things a little too quickly?
Lucrecia: And why not? All those people at Shin-Ra have laughed at my thesis. I have to prove them wrong.
Grimoire: Rushing into matters will get you nowhere, Doctor.
Amused by her excitement, he turns to look at the test tube.
Grimoire: Hmm?
The matter inside breaks through the glass.
Grimoire: Look out!

As if a self-fulfilling prophecy, the dark matter began acting strangely and burst out of the test tube it was contained in. Without giving it a second thought, Grimoire pushed Lucrecia out of the way, taking the hit. Lucrecia rushed back to his side, but by then, the dark matter had taken hold of his body. With his last few breaths, he asked Lucrecia to tell his son that he was sorry. Lucrecia pleaded for him to hold on, but Grimoire peacefully faded away in her arms, knowing that it was time to return to the lifestream.

Lucrecia: Doctor Valentine!
Grimoire: Tell my son that I'm...sorry.
Lucrecia: Doctor Valentine! Doctor Valentine!
Grimoire: My time has come to return to the lifestream.
Lucrecia: No! No... Come back! Why did you have to fade away? Why did you...

Grimoire's death was the catalyst for the tragedy that occurred between Lucrecia and Vincent. Lucrecia never stopped feeling guilty for what happened and pushed Vincent away. Once Vincent discovered that she had worked with his father, the situation only worsened. Although Vincent never blamed her for the accident, Lucrecia refused to believe otherwise and turned to Hojo.

Vincent: Lucrecia, this file...
Lucrecia: It's...it's none of your business.
Vincent: But it is! Why didn't you tell me you worked with my father?
Lucrecia: Stop it! Just stop it!
Vincent: Lucrecia...
Lucrecia: I... It was all my fault. I didn't mean for your father to die. I couldn't... I'm so sorry.
Vincent: But I never blamed her. All I wanted was to see her smiling face. But after that day, the light left her heart.
