About Distant Melody
Distant Melody is a lyrics archive dedicated to the forgotten or obscure songs from children's films, television shows, musicals, commercials, and other forms of entertainment. We hope to rekindle fond memories of the songs from our childhoods as well as introduce them to newer generations.
Why "Distant Melody"?
The name was taken from the title of a song from the musical Peter Pan (1954). I felt that both the title and the lyrics of the song fit the purpose of this site so well.
Once upon a time and long ago
I heard someone singing, soft and low
Now when day is done and night is near
I recall this song I used to hear
|
Long ago this song was sung to me
Now it's just a distant melody
Somewhere from the past I used to know
Once upon a time and long ago

The Story Behind the Idea
It all began when I got nostalgic for the songs from old kid's movies and shows I used to watch. When I was a little girl, I adored singing along with the characters and imagining that I was part of the story. Many of those tunes were from the very well known Disney movies, but there were also quite a few that came from the more obscure animated and non-animated children's films.
Years later, I tried to find the lyrics to some of my favorite songs online and failed to find anything more than movie synopsis pages. I was really surprised that nobody else adored the sweet Charlotte's Web songs or the fun tunes from the various Don Bluth films. Then I realized, as I started visiting various music message boards, that there were many other people like me who were asking the same thing I was. Where can I get the lyrics to my favorite, unappreciated childhood movies?
In January of 2003, Distant Melody was born. Since then, myself and visitors have been contributing lyrics in hopes of making the site a good source for the lyrics for the "forgotten" songs of our childhoods.
Webmistress
I'm a simple college student named Gabriella with a love for old children's movies and songs. I've been designing web pages for about 5 or 6 years now. It's been a challenge to maintain this site, but I intend to try my best at keeping up with it. I hope you enjoy Distant Melody and that it serves its purpose well!
